It’s been a year since we broke ground on this project and the progress is amazing! Inside, the walls and ceilings are being finished and light fixtures are beginning to go into place. The interior windows are in and exterior windows are now being installed. Most of the metal siding above and below the windows is in place. Also on the outside, the plaster stucco sections are curing and will soon be ready for paint. Keep an eye out for the metal roofing, which is expected to arrive in the next 2 to 3 weeks.

Our children's building is really taking on shape and definition! You can see the main entrance in the center of the screen and a peek of the amphitheater to the lower left. The framing is complete and the plumbing, electrical, HVAC, fire sprinklers, and data systems extend throughout the building. Already there are sections where walls are insulated and covered with sheetrock. Next up: keep an eye on this site as the windows, exterior siding and roofing go into place!

The concrete for the second floor in our new children’s building was poured this week! Next week we will pour the third floor, continue installing scaffolding and begin framing! There’s a lot of activity and some days we have close to 60 tradesmen all working at the same time. Please keep the safety of all of the workers in your prayers.

We started this week with a "Topping Off" celebration! It was so exciting and moving to watch the last structural beam go into place! By the end of this week, all of the red steel will be in place. We are grateful to Delta Ironworks for their excellent work, and of course, for the continuous oversight and incredible performance of our general contractor, Bogard Construction.
As for what's next, you can now see shiny metal decking on the 2nd and 3rd levels. Lightweight concrete will be poured onto the metal in order to form these two floors. You can also get a peek of the 1st floor through the two large openings on the lower lefthand side of the building. The amphitheater-which is situated just outside these openings-will be built over the next few weeks.

The steel beams have arrived! Over the next two weeks you will begin to see the steel structure of the building take shape! Keep it on the web cam, because this is the "action!" phase of construction! And thanks so much for your support.

The slab is now in and our children’s building is officially out of the ground! It was amazing to see how quickly and skillfully the Berkeley Cement crew poured and finished 300 yards of concrete! Next week, we begin erecting structural steel!

The first floor walls on the north and east sides of our new children’s ministry building have been poured! As each section cures, the forms are removed and the permanent concrete walls become visible! Even at this stage, you can begin to get a sense of the building’s outline.

The foundation footings have been filled and the building is starting to rise! What you see going up now are the form walls for the first floor. Various sections will be filled with concrete during the coming weeks. Once completed, they make up the structural walls for the first level. To give you some perspective, when you come through the main entrance, you would be standing roughly at the same height as these walls.
On another note, at last summer’s ground breaking ceremony, hundreds of TLCers wrote prayer requests on flags for the children and ministries that will occupy this building. And just a few days ago, several members of the TLC staff held an informal prayer time and buried these flags under the foundation. It’s a great reminder that our ministries are supported by the prayers of God’s people!

The building foundation is starting to take shape! Our progress was set back about a month due to heavy rains (a blessing overall) and difficulty compacting our native soil (see previous update). Now with a very solid building pad, the work on the foundation has begun in earnest! Through the end of December and into mid-January, expect to see footing trenches, under-slab utility runs, form walls, a lot of rebar, and the elevator pit take shape. By the third week of January we will begin pouring concrete, so expect to see a lot of trucks moving in and out of the job site! Thank you for your ongoing prayers, support, and enthusiasm!

This week we ran into our first noteworthy surprise. Incredibly, after three years of drought the soil below the foundation is too wet! It’s mostly clay and due to its high moisture content we were not able to attain the 90% compaction level we need under the footings. As a result, we are removing this soil and replacing it with baserock-which is being successfully compacted.
So the fix works. Unfortunately, it comes at an additional cost of $225K, which we will cover from our project contingency. Please pray the rest of our excavation and dirt work goes on without further hiccups! On the bright side, the Lord does talk about the wisdom of building on solid rock!

The progress on the building has been nothing short of astounding!
Excavators have been digging out space for the entire first floor of our new children's center, which, from the main sidewalk in front of the gym, will actually be underground. On Thursday Oct. 30 workers wrapped up the major excavation and began to prepare for the next phase of the project!

We’re getting ready for the big dig! The grading for our new children’s building involves excavating 4500 cubic yards of dirt. In advance, we’re moving a utility trench, dismantling part of the kindergarten playground, and will be bringing in the steel “I” beams used to shore up the sides of the hole.

On Tuesday night, September 2, the Soquel Creek Water Board, by a four to one vote, granted us a "Unconditional Will-Serve Letter". This means we can proceed with our permitting process and are planning to begin "moving-dirt" the week of September 15.
